I went to see Black Sabbath in San Antonio on April 28, 1986. On the way there from my hometown which is 2 hours away, we heard that Black Sabbath had change their vocalist. Remember, this is pre-internet days. Then KISS-FM did an interview with this new "vocalist". Shit. The guy said he didn't know hardly anu Sabbath prior to the try out and that he "hummed" his way through most of it. He then went on to say that Ozzy, Dio, Gillian and Hughes were 'well within" his range and that the fans shouldn't worry........."fuck him" I thought and said (as did my buddies) "we're fucking screwed" We were predisposed to hate whomever came out.

At the start of the show, something magical happened. He became Sabbath. I remember my friend asking if the guy with the vest was Dio ("Neon Knights"). My God I ate my words. They only played an hour or so, but they were great.

As a fan I awaited, The Eternal Idol with rapt anticipation...only to find that Ray wasn't there. Then I awaited Blur Murder's album.....only to feel the same. Once Badlands came out, I wasn't disappointed.

It didn't taae long for me to realize that Ray had given Sabbath it's last gasp with Idol, only for it to be thrown away. Hearing the demos now only prove it beyond question.

I rember them playing the last time in Austin in 93 or so in support of "Voodoo Highway". one of my best friends opened up for them. I didn't go as I had foot surgery earlier that day. I remember thinking I'll see them on the next go around......man did I miss out. My buddy said Ray was kind and gracious and that they kicked ass.

For whatever reason, I googled him today. For ray's mother, I don't make it a habit to live in the past......your son was that good. I'm a 33 year old Probation Officer with a couple of degrees from The University of Texas......your son made a difference to a ton of different people. I am so sorry for you loss and I thank you and him for your contribution to my life.
