As Long as You Know
Chapter 12
It is the afternoon before graduation. Prom has passed, Omari won prom king, and Laura finally won prom queen, the legit way. The guys are playing ball at the courts while the girls are at Christen’s house. They are playing that corny question game like before. (See chapter 6.5.5)
Dreux has the ball and is dribbling it, “So how’s everyone’s love life?” he said as he shot the ball and missed it, Omari caught it and is now dribbling
“Mine’s great, I met Christen’s parents a few weeks ago, they nice, and they like me, and they get along with my folks,” Omari said as he shot the ball and made it, Timmy then caught the ball
“Love is such a strong word. I don’t know about love, but the sex is great,” Timmy said as he relived he and Jhene’s six month anniversary (see chapter 10) he threw the ball to Mario
“I feel ya. I’m telling ya, get Christen to hook you up with a private schoolgirl like Glory, that girl know what she be doing inbetween the sheets, ya heard me?” Mario said as he threw the ball to Rell and he and Timmy gave each dap
“Well, me and Dayah are hooking back up, I just still can’t believe she didn’t tell me about her boyfriend, I mean ex or not, she coulda told me,” he said as he threw the ball back at Dreux
“Man, at least y’all ended that ish before you got too serious, you smarter than me,” he said dribbling the ball
“What you talking bout, D?” Omari asked clueless
“I told Candice that we should be exsclusive and she completely dissed me. Talking some ish about how she was unsure. Please, this ain’t no damn deodarant commercial!” He said throwing the ball at Keonte, snapping him out of a daze “What’s wrong with you?” he asked K
“Tracy’s pregnant,” he said bluntly as he dribbled and shot the ball
“What?!” Mario said as the ball came down and hit him in the head, “Pregnant? How did this happen?”
“Well, we were in the bed and…”K began to say
“We know how it happened, but we saying how could you be so…” Timmy began to say
“STUPID!” Omari yelled at him
“Man, didn’t we teach you to always strap twice, no matter what?” Rell asked him walking over to the bench as the guys followed him
“I know, and that’s the funny thing, I did! We used a condom and everything, I don’t know how this happened,” Keonte said rubbing his head
“Well, what you gon do?” Dreux asked him
“I’ma be a man, and handle my responsibilities,” Keonte said as he looked up at Dreux
“Nigga, we ain’t on Maury, I say you make her test, I mean did she take a test?” Timmy asked Keonte
“I don’t know, but she’s got all the signs” Keonte said
“Well, don’t you feel you owe it to yourself and Tracy to be sure?” Omari said looking worried
“I’m saying, take her to the doctor, make her take a test, and you be right there when the doctor reads the result,” Rell said to him, like he had all the answers
“We all know Tracy can be kinda hoe-ish, and if she is pregnant, It might not be yours,” Timmy said to Keonte
“Y’all really think she would lie to me like that?” Keonte said in disbelief
“Hey, man it’s sad but true, women are scandalous nowadays,” Dreux said as he took the ball and they started dribbling again
“So, everyone, how is life treating you? I know my life is good, I met O’s parents last month. They’re really nice and they get along with my parents. That’s so great,” Christen said painting her nails
“Life is giving me one swift kick in the ass,” Candice said as she played with the strings on the rug in Christen’s room “Dreux told me he wanted to get serious, like one-on-one, and I got all scared and told him I wasn’t ready. He got mad and told me to leave, he wouldn’t even kiss me,” That was about a month ago, and we haven’t even been the same since,” Candice said about to cry
“Well, I’m sorry to hear that, but life hasn’t been too good for me either. I mean Rell and I may have hooked back up but I get the feeling that he is still pissed about that year-old phone call from Jason. And I’m still pissed that he went into my voicemail,” Dayah said getting heated just thinking about it
“I hate it that things aren’t going good with you all but, me and Mario are doing great. Christen, I can’t thank you enough for hooking us up. He told me last month that he doesn’t love me because he doesn’t want to say until he means it, but he’s madly in love with me. I almost cried, and then I lost it.” Glory said beaming
“Lost what?” Tracy said in a dumbassly way
“Her virginity, stupid. Girl, I’m happy for you I just hope he was the one,” Christen said
“Well, life has been great Timmy is so sweet, we went all the way last month and it was great,” Jhene said expecting Tracy to get pissed, but instead she just looked at the floor
“Tracy isn’t it about time you turned on the biotch button, she just talked about your man,” Dayah said to Tracy
“He isn’t my man, and speaking of man in about 7.5 months a lil’ one will be coming into this world, courtesy of me,” Tracy said quietly
“What?” Christen asked her
“I’m pregnant,” Tracy said with tears in her eyes
“Oh, my god, by who?” Glory asked her
“Keonte,” Tracy said sounding ashamed
“Keonte? Does he know?” Jhene said sounding shocked
“No, and I don’t even know for sure, I’m too scared to go to the doctor, but I have all the signs. And you all better not tell anyone” Tracy said playing with her jeans
“Girl, you need to get checked out, on the real. But speaking of not telling anyone, I got my acceptance letter from NYU, they want me!” Christen said changing the subject and getting excited
“Christen, that’s so tight!” Dayah said as she and the rest of the girls hugged her “But does O know?” she said sounding concerned
“No, and I don’t know how to tell him. I think I love him, and I don’t wanna leave,” Christen said as the smile slowly faded from her face and she looked out her window
“Girls, we need to get ready for graduation!” Candice said looking at her watch
They all left Christen’s house and got ready, the guys did the same. Graduation was at a big stadium, because there were a lot of students. Everyone was in their red and baby blue cap and gowns except for Timmy and Jhene, who were Juniors, and Glory whose graduation wasn’t until next week. Christen and Dayah opened up the show with the Star Spangled Banner, while Omari, Dreux, Mario, and Jarell sang the class song, which was Boyz II Men’s “It’s so Hard to Say Goodbye.” The ceremony went by smoothly and they went to some graduation parties.
~~~~At the party~~~~
“Rell, we need to talk,” Dayah said as she pulled him off the dance floor and outside to the backyard, “Rell, I know we hooked back up and everything, but I still feel like you’re pissed off at me, and it makes me feel uncomfortable. Is there anything you wanna to tell me?” Dayah said as she looked Jarell in his doe eyes.
“Dayah, it’s just that… I don’t know, it’s like I don’t know if you’re thinking about him when you’re with me, if you still have feelings for me. If you love him. And it bothers me that you didn’t tell me, I had to find out, and on accident.” Rell said searching for the right words, and looking at the ground
“Jarell, if you would’ve have taken the time to listen to the message you would find out that he called me and left that message on February 24, 2001. About a year and a half ago. I guess that I saved the message because Jason was my first real boyfriend. You know, the first real guy that ever cared about me. But then, I met you, and I forgot all about Jason. Nothing else mattered to me after I met you. I’m sorry that I never told you about Jason, but I didn’t think it was that important. And to answer your question, no I don’t love him, and he means nothing to me.” She said frankly to Jarell as he sat down in a lawn chair and he sat next to her
“Well, I’m sorry for snooping through your voicemail, and I’m sorry that I left you downtown. I just got really mad. I didn’t think our relationship was marital, but I didn’t expect you to have someone else. I guess I just got kinda jealous. But I want you to forgive me, because I really am sorry.” Jarell said as he pulled Dayah close to him
“I forgive you, Jarell,” she said as she held his hand
“I forgive you too, Dayah,” he said as he pulled her close and kissed her passionately
The party went on and everybody danced and had a good time, all of a sudden, the music stops and Candice went up on the stage where the DJ was and grabbed the mic.
“Dreux Frederic, if you’re at this party, I just want you to know, that I’m sorry for what happened. I just never expected for someone like you to come into my life. Things were going so perfect that when you asked me to be your one and only, I got scared, and I was afraid to say it, but now, I’m ready to shout it to the world. Dreux, I will be your girlfriend.” Candace said pridefully as the DJ turned on N’Sync’s “Girlfriend,” and she stepped off the stage and found Dreux,
“You really mean what you said up there?” Dreux said holding her hands
“Yes, I mean it more than I’ve ever meant anything before,” Candice said as she looked into his eyes and played with his hair,
“Aight then, Candice Garcia, will you be my girlfriend?” Dreux said as he waited for her answer
“Yes, Dreux Frederic, I will be your girlfriend,” she said as she pulled him into the kiss she had missed so much
~~~~Christen’s House~~~~
Omari just dropped Christen off, and they are sitting on her front porch talking, she has decided to tell him about NYU
“Guess what, baby?” Omari said getting happy
“What?” Christen said wondering
“I got my acceptance letter from UCLA,” Omari said cheesing, “They want me to play ball for them,” he said beaming
“I’m so proud of you, I knew you could do it,” she said as she took a deep breath and began to speak, “I got my acceptance letter too, but It’s not to UCLA,” she said as he began to try and guess what college she got into
“Oh, so where you going? Stanford, USC, UC Berkeley?” Omari said as he looked at Christen waiting for her answer
“Um, try NYU,” she said kinda mumbling and playing with her hair
“NYU? As in New York? But that’s so far away from here,” Omari said getting mad
“Baby, calm down it’s not that far, and plus, they offered me a full four year, business scholarship,” Christen said, “I really want this,” she said looking him in the eye
“But Christen can’t you do that at UCLA? That’s only 30 minutes from here, but NYU is like 30,000 miles from here,” Omari said getting up off the porch
“Omari, I gotta do what I gotta do. It’s my life, and this is my dream why can’t you be happy for me, instead of pointing out all the bad things about this situation?” Christen said getting up and following him to his car
“I’m trying to be happy for you, but you have to understand my point of view. We have so many plans together, and how are we supposed to be together when you’re clear across the country in New York,” Omari said getting his keys out of his pocket
“Baby, I don’t want to think about this right now, and I wish you would stop bringing it up, let’s just drop it.” Christen said grabbing Omari’s hand
“Yea, let’s drop it, look, Christen, I gotta go, I’ll see you around, aight.” Omari said letting go of her hand, and getting into his car, he didn’t even kiss her goodbye. He got in his car, turned up the music and drove off, leaving Christen standing in the driveway, looking stupid. She turned around as the tears started to fall down her cheeks, went inside and ran up the steps to her room. She called Omari’s cell phone to make sure he got home allright, and he didn’t answer. She rolled over and cried herself to sleep.
