Subject: Carmen

I think I like the music in Carmen more than the music in La Traviata and Rigoletto. This is probably because the music in Carmen is a lot more upbeat and rapid when compared to most of the songs in the other two operas. Carmen like Rigoletto despite good tunes is not quite as good when you actually know what they are saying, as in both operas the characters have somewhat dirty minds to be put kindly. Carmen's music seems to have a much sharper edge to it as the music is very detached from each note most of the time.

But I do have one very large question about Carmen, why is it in French? It takes place in Spain so if they are not going to use Italian shouldn't they use Spanish, or is it because more people knew French than Spanish. Or is it something else altogether?
