She didn't need him...Iason has been there when he was dead, unable to care for the woman he loved, unable to get back to her. And he was still there, and she wanted him. Deep in his gut, Freb knew this was true. Time, he had realized, was not unlimited. His suddenly shortened life had proved that to him, and he didn't want her to waste her life on someone she wasn't happy with. She had issues to work through that didn't involve him, and he doubted she wanted him there to help in the first place.
