Subject: Marcus Paus -- The New Urban Legend of Guitarists

In the late seventie and eighties guitarists whispered the name of Shawn Lane; they told each other stories with each being significantly more outrageous than the last . . . and when Lane finally appeared the unthinkable had happened. The stories were true and did not even touch on the surface of the reality. Shawn Lane was a monsterous player that exceeded all expectations. And now that we have our boogie-man of guitar it seems neccessary for people to invite one that surpasses even him . . . Marcus Paus. Yes, he does actually exist, but that is not saying much. I've heard the MP3 files and yes, he is fast, but is he musical -- no. As far as being a world record holder, well we have heard the stories debunking his skills. And besides, has anyone from Guiness timed Shawn Lane, Buckethead, Terry Syek, et cetera? I think not. And speed is not an element of excellence, it only enhances it (well, at least it can). Shawn is fast, in and of itself, that amounts to little, but the fact that Shawn can play his beautiful and complex musical statements at such a speed -- even more amazing when improvised -- is so much more impressive. Why anyone would want to ape such a one dimensional player with less-than-precise technique . . . Paus that is. Ick.
