Subject: ASHLEY'S CURIOUS CAUSEWAYS!

One of Ashley’s prime attractions has to be those curious causeways that divide the reservoir. I don’t have any official explanation for all of them but I can guess at why some of them exist.

If you look at the 1827 map of the Ashley area that I put up at http://westmass.tripod.com/ashley.html you see there are at least two ponds. By 1895 it looks like the water level is up and there are three ponds with two public roads going between them. Were there any dams built prior to the reservoir? There once was a large icehouse operation at Ashley which I assume predates 1895.

I suspect that when the main reservoir dam was built a few years later these roads were in danger of being flooded and the roadbeds were raised forming at least three, possibly four, of the causeways. As for the rest... anyone know?
