I understand perfectly well that fantasy books aren't supposed to be "normal", but when you get right down to it, Redwall isn't exactly fantasy...

Now, before you start thinking I'm some kind of strange sicko who doesn't understand that animals can't walk and talk, let me explain.

Redwall is definitely fantasy in the sense that little mice and squirrels don't run around with swords in real life. But fantasy books are usually defined as having magic and sorcery as well, and with the possible exception of Martin appearing in the occasional dream, there is no definable magic in Redwall. So, yes, Redwall is fantasy, but the boundaries of the real world still apply, because it is basically just the human Dark Ages with an animal twist.

And, of course, for the sake of good story-telling, BJ has to make his heroes inevitably succeed over the villains.

But RP is not story-telling. RP is ppl interecting with each other through the use of characters. As far as simple RP is concerned, there is no fate or saving grace or last strength a character can have.

After all, if we'd stuck that closely to the books, no one would want to be vermin because the vermin would inevitably lose and no one would want to be a goodbeast because hey, what fun is being unstoppable?

Replies:

[> [> [> [> [> Tyrants have to conquer someone before they can rule supreme, cant they? The highlight of a warlords life, is his death. Probbably left heaps of would-be warriors in a bloody pile, unfortunately noone writes about how they defeated empires, just how theirs was defeated. And if you notice, I never said Redwall was full blown, spell flinging, dragon spawning, fire breathing fantasy. I said "In some cases, not this one, fantasy... yada yada yada" just thougt Id clear that up... -- Vales Creator, 12:41:39 05/31/02 Fri
