Great hearing from you Phil ! Been a while, hope you and yours are well !
RIFLE:
Hmmmmm, the posts already made in response to the question sure do echo my feelings. Good suggestions men !
Weight/size(configuration-design)/caliber and durability all come to mind. I hate delicate shit that tends to get knocked out of whack by a fall, drop or bump...
For years I felt that a RUGER #1 in 375 H & H or 458 Nitro Express would do me as per my req..........
Then the world changed, ugh, So I began looking into the lever guns, Marlin 444, Winch. 30-30, 35 wheelin, and the cartridge of the western states the 30-06....
Honestly I tried a lot of combos and ideas.. Ya know, at some point a man must go w/ what he feels that HIS WORLD & method of fighting will accept....beyond the experts advice and far removed from the pages of "Gun Month" magazine..

Phil, I took a simple path, (typical sort of move from a hillbilly such as myself I reckon). I now play an AK-47 for rough spots and run a 44 magnum lever action brush gun (Short rifle). It also runs the ammo I use in my pistol.
(I agree about pistol cartridge-rifles that arent potent enuff too !) But, for MY WORLD these choices are acceptable and accurate in their application to the task(s) at hand.

BUT....if I had to, just had to make one choice, it would be my 30-30 lever action, iron sights, a mix of solid bullets and the accelerator rounds (w/ the necked down needle nosed fast flyers).... Plus I have a pocket kit reloading system for the field.. save the brass, reload on the spot etc...

In Closing:
Big is always better, but it's heavy, hard to find ammo at times and cannot fill every bill.
Recall when the cons broke out of prison in Ideeho a few years back. Broke in a sporting goods store.
They stole BIG game rifles and man, those simple, slow shooting big bangers were simly AWESOME...psych out indeed and power to spare. The cons were making shots from over a mile away, open sights and HITTING police cars, stopping them cold in one shot ! AND... aircraft will laugh, snicker at a man with a small gun, pistols and plinkers do shit on aircraft.. NOW, whack a copter or small plane with a .458 and oh hell yeah, they KNOW they been HIT, even armored birds register a severe "DUNT-Clang" if they bump into a large rd or two. (The 45-70 comes to mind here--what a cool round).. OK, enuff from me, the other posts were great, I just wanted to say HEY PHIL ..good to hear from you dude !
Yer pal,
JAK
