I know of the things that you asked about. We all seek some type of pain register to make the knife work-sparring we do seem more "real". Perhaps the cheapest and easiest thing to use (sparingly please) is Fire. The smoldering incense stick idea, but on a larger-more durable scale... no real threat, yet quite painful like a real cut. Use common sense. I like this method.

The "parrying daggers" from Santelli.com work well also. As Gaucho and I pointed out, yes, indeedy doo! THEY do HURT ! They cost more, but, for now, for me, they are the best bet for what I do.
