Subject: Noise in crankshaft damper ares (5.0L V8)

I have a '98 5.0 V8 Explorer. I thought I had the old belt noise syndrome. Changed the belt and the idler and no help. Was about to change the water pump and got the bright idea to start it without the belt, just to see if the noise was coming from any belt-driven device. The noise came from the front of the engine and seems to be at the back of the crankshaft damper. Anybody else ever had this problem? If so, what is the remedy?

Thanks in advance and regards, Tom
