He crawled out from beneath his rock wearily, young paws scuffing the dirt. *Hungry,* he thought as his stomach growled. He strode disconsolately through the forest, following the deer-path though he knew he still couldn't bring one of them down. He caught a whiff of overly-ripe blackberries, mingled with that of some sort of bird he hadn't met yet. Trembling, he went into a crouch and crept forward, barely stirring the leaves in his concentration. He paused before peeking around a bend and almost pounced then and there- a troupe of ptarmigan strutted around there, picking berries. He wished mightily that he dared attack the largest, but it was obviously a mother, and experienced. *She'd be too tough to chew anyway,* he told himself. His mouth watered, and he had to swallow hard to keep himself from drooling. He began to move forward silently, every muscle quivering and coiled like a spring. One of the young ones, barely a fledgling, turned from the group and began wandering down the path, chasing a beetle. Tekaine's eyes widened, and he held himself perfectly still, blending into the shadows. Nearer... nearer... no, not yet- wait for it- NOW! He shot forward as though from a gun and landed heavily on the bird, the force making its head snap back with an audible *crack*. Its neck was cleanly broken. Tek picked his prize up, unmindful of the squawking ruckus the rest of the flock was making, until he caught scent of the berries again. He ignored the birds as he strode over to the berry bush, and seemed to shrug. Well... if the ptarmigan could eat them, it couldn't be that bad. Without another moment's hesitation he began to make his meal of berries and the fat chick.
