Hello Chris;

I have a thought, but I'm no mechanic, so check this out with someone more knowledgable before taking any action. I replaced the engine in my daughters 90 Accord a couple years ago, and had some guidance from a local Honda mechanic in the process.

One thing I remember...
He told me to clean the EGR ports in the intake manifold while I had it removed. I remember they were almost completely plugged. They are about 1/8" round and internal to the manifold.

The EGR valve opens to allow exhaust gases to enter the intake manifold, and into the combustion chambers (via these EGR ports). If you look at the top of the intake manifold, you will see a channel that runs from the EGR valve over to the other side of the manifild. This channel has 4 round plugs (if I recall) which cover the area above these ports. I think these plugs are pressed in and seal the manifold. Apparently they allow for access to clean the ports, but I don't know how to remove or reinstall them. I just cleaned the ports from the inside with the manifold removed.

If your ports are obstructed, I don't know what the symptoms would be. Not sure if this could be your problem, but if the computer is opening the EGR valve to add exhaust gasses and they aren't getting in, it may or may not affect performance, but it will affect emissions.

Just food for thought...

Good luck...

Mike
