Subject: Sore bum remedies - reply to Paul

Hi, I have suffered from the problem but nowhere near as badly as you. I cycle daily doing about 300km a week and fixed the problem by using one of the super-comfy armchair type seats for most of my riding - it helps having a training bike and a race bike so I don't have to swap seats. The seat has "Tailbones" written on it. I have to endure scorn from fellow cyclists and from bike shop mechanics for riding on this armchair but I sure have a comfy ride. For my race bike I tried the first generation of the ergonomic race seats and found them wanting as the ridges either side of the centre cut out were too hard and led to the really annnoying pressure pimples. I now just use a standard seat that suits me but I do get a sore bum after about 100 km. Looking at the new seats in Pennys yesterday, I am tempted to try one of the new gel filled race seats they have. One was only $60 but the Fizk or whatever the word is models were $150 + but did look really comfortable.

To desensitize the bum I would take two weeks off the bike or however long it take for bum to come right, my experience is that once body parts get irritated the condition can become chronic if one keeps pushing on. Then build back up slowly using one of the armchair seats with one of the gel ones for racing. I rise out of the saddle regularly to avoid the constant pressure.

Best of luck. When I had the condition at its worst I couldn't sit down comfortably at work. So I have some idea of the misery you are having to endure.
