Subject: Track beginnings

Wellington is one of the best centres for cycling in NZ thanks to the superb training rides available and the excellent programmes of PNP and the Vets. But missing, of course, is any track cycling. I have no idea how to go from where we are now with an all but disused sorry-looking velodrome to having a functional one featuring a track racing season, but I do know that there are more than a handful of Wgtn folk who would like to try track cycling. And there has been a bit of discussion lately about how to make it happen.

The velodrome is usable for training and I have started going there for one speed session a week. (I don't have a track bike yet but its on the shopping list). Are there any vets or others interested in getting together during the summer for training evenings at the velodrome say on a mid week night. I know absolutely nothing about track cycling except that whizzing around the velodrome gives me a real buzz. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any literature about training or techniques for the track. So if you have experience in this area, there are folk out there who would be very interested in learning the ropes.

If nothing much happened other than more people began using the velodrome for occasional speed sessions then that would be a worthwhile development. But it could lead on: perhaps once we have some experience we could try sharing travel to participate in a meet at the Wanganui velodrome - assuming they get over their current problems with the track. And one day Wgtn track racing might return so Wellington cyclists can have the opportunities readily available in other cities and a number of provincial towns.

If you are interested in getting together for mid week training evenings at the velodrome ( located on the eastern side of Mt Vic above the basketball courts at Hataitai Park - access off Ruahine St) either drop me a line and suggest a night that suits best [say 6 pm Wednesday] or get a few mates together and make it happen yourself. Road bikes are fine for velodrome training.
