I started learning classical guitar with an inexpensive evening class, and I bought an inexpensive guitar to start with. The teacher was good, and we used a good book that gave the basics of learning the notes, to be able to read music. We didn't use tablature at all, then. The pieces to play were easy, but sounded good. That's why I stuck with it. A good teacher is important at the beginning, I'd say. It's important to learn the notes on the guitar to be able to read music. (If I'm allowed to give a plug to myself, I have just made a set of flash cards for learning ALL the notes on the guitar, up to and including the 12th fret of the guitar. I have them listed on Amazon Books in the UK and on Amazon Books in the US. They're called "Philip's Learn ALL the Notes on the Guitar." I taught myself all the notes on the guitar thanks to the flash cards that I made. To get better at classical guitar, I think most people would agree that you should start to learn the notes on the guitar, and work with easy guitar pieces. The easy pieces can sound great, classical or popular songs. Good luck with it.

Philip
