Dear "Mary, quite contrary" (may I say that?), I am very much impressed by your combination of intellectual and emotional maturity + life experience/wisdom. And I don't give that kind of praise lightly!
I agree that one needs some kind of cause. I agree with your analysis, except I don't think that the cause must necessarily be religion. But let's not get into that discussion. :)
As for Iraq, I hear that ``60,000 Iraqis 'Disappeared' into US Camps'' -- http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8994.htm. ``Their families don't know where they've been held, what the charges are. And this is infuriating people... some of whom are angry enough to pick up a gun.'' I guess that what's going on is the usual creating enemies of former potential friends thing that arrogance tends to do...
But you, "Mary, quite contrary", is the very anti-thesis of arrogance, and I will not hide a desire to communicate offlist to learn how you are an activist in a very small scale. I give my solemn word that the secret is safe with me (and the US agency that no doubt is monitoring my Internet communications :)).
