I didn't find out about the connection between spina bifida and birth defects from the Americans...but from Lancet. It took nearly forty years for that to become part of the mainstream nutritional supplement for pregnant women.

If you look at the RDA it is the bare minimum to prevent malnutrition, not to heal. Remember why the British Navy were considered formidable and called Limeys? Because the sailors got scurvy on long voyages due to the lack of fresh fruit and a complet C complex?
