More then likely I'll be spending Thanksgiving alone but I hope the rest of you spend the time with much family and friends close by. Tomorrow will also be my five year anniversary of being committ...I mean, anniversary of being admitted into Milwaukee Psyche. for clinical depression. Wow, so much has happened and I've grown so much in insight, wisdom and empowerment.

Thanks men for being my friends, all these many years. Even when I get frustrated or bossy or tempermental, I do remain blessed to be in touch with you all even though its not as often as I want it to be. I am thankful for the advice and the wisdom, the sarcasm, the tomfoolery and the love and MOST IMPORTANT, the acceptance of me so I feel safe to BE me.

Just a little bit of Rumi for the Holiday:

Stay together, friends
Don’t scatter and sleep

Our friendship is made
of being awake.

My mom will be close at hand, and the rest of my family as far away as I can manage.

Indeed. You're still a whack job, but at least you're not depressed!

Okay, I take back the whack job part. And I, too, am thankful for our unusual friendship, its highs and lows. I wish we could all spend more time together as well. I'd be a better person for the time well-spent.

That's nice, but how about a little Thanksgiving prayer from your pal, William S. Burroughs, that smirking old beatnik bastard:

A Thanksgiving Prayer
by William S. Burroughs

Thanks for the wild turkey and the passenger pigeons, destined to be shit out through wholesome American guts.

Thanks for a continent to despoil and poison.

Thanks for Indians to provide a modicum of challenge and danger.

Thanks for vast herds of bison to kill and skin leaving the carcasses to rot.

Thanks for bounties on wolves and coyotes.

Thanks for the American dream, to vulgarize and to falsify until the bare lies shine through.

Thanks for the KKK.

For nigger-killin' lawmen, feelin' their notches.

For decent church-goin' women, with their mean, pinched, bitter, evil faces.

Thanks for "Kill a Queer for Christ" stickers.

Thanks for laboratory AIDS.

Thanks for Prohibition and the war against drugs.

Thanks for a country where nobody's allowed to mind their own business.

Thanks for a nation of finks.

Yes, thanks for all the memories -- all right let's see your arms!

You always were a headache and you always were a bore.

Thanks for the last and greatest betrayal of the last and greatest of human dreams.

A happy Thanksgiving to all. I feel that we are all family and although we are apart today you are all in my thoughts.

Jeff, that was a great post. Thank you.

Ken, uh, Burroughs, uh, thanks... I think. :-)

See you all soon, I hope.

I can imagine a big thanksgiving dinner filled with people: cousins, grandchildren, inlaws and grown siblings, and there is the eccentric Uncle Ken, reciting Burroughs as the Thanksgiving family blessing!
OR
Ken meets a woman who comes from a big family and she invites Ken to attend. Being the guest, the family requests Ken to begin Thanksgiving Grace which he does proudly by reciting the heroin-addicted Burroughs.

That scene would be great in my next writing project: National Lapoon's Family Thanksgiving!

You people obviously have no appreciation for the classics!
