I just wanted to throw onto the table, a different perspective that might shed some light or help regarding John's situation.
Its about Values & Ideals.

This has helped me to realign my wants and desires...what I am willing to do and what I am willing to sacrifice. Any feedback on this is always welcome.(unless you disagree..then shut the hell up!) :)

"A value is something I recognize as good and worthwhile, that I choose to have in my life now by sacrificing other things".

"An ideal is something I recognize as good and worthwhile, that want in my life sometime in the future. I am not willing to sacrifice for it now".

We often think some things are values because they are important to us. But when we look inside ourselves, we often find out that we are not willing to sacrifice for them, and that they aren't values, but in fact ideals.

"I enjoy writing. I have been working on several children stories, and a novel. I have put some time into them to the point that I submitted three separate stories for publishing. At the time they were a value…after a while, I took interest in other things. I still kept them as a value or so I thought. When I would work on them and get interrupted I would become very upset. Yet I might not touch it any more for a good month. Once I realized that writing right now in my life is an ideal and not a value, I find myself more patience with interruptions or even delays or distractions. I get to it someday…right now I have other values in my life. Writing has become an ideal."

Once John discovers what he wants to do, I imagine the next step is knowing whether its a value, that he is willing to sacrifice and make it a priority or if in fact its an ideal...
