Congrats on your little girl. Each dog takes things at their own pace which is always best. By rushing them you can set them back. That being said, many times by bringing in a more social playmate, they can pick up on their uninhibited temperament and follow suit. Many times they learn far more by watching other dogs than we can ever teach them. What you need to be careful of is getting a dog that will be too alpha/dominating with your submissive girl as that could cause her to withdraw even more. If it were me, I'd go for a male as they tend to be more laid back (not always, but generally).

By adopting, you then get to correspond with the foster parent who has taken the time to evaluate the dog's temperament, personality, and social status in their pack who can then match you up with a dog that will best suit not only your family lifestyle but your existing dog.

Good luck.
