Yes, this is actually pretty normal behavior. Your new rescue has now completely settled in and has decided that you are his and he doesn't want to share. Any time he exhibits this behavior and, if at all possible, before it escalates to that point (i.e., the minute you feel his body stiffen or see his lip curl) he goes on the floor and does not come back up onto your lap or any furniture until he is invited.

Is this the only time it's happening, or are there other alpha male struggles going on as well - like over food, toys, etc.? If so, you need to reinforce the other dog's alpha status. This means the other dog get fed first, gets treats first, comes in the door first, and is always in a "higher" position than the new rescue.

Many times we humans make the situation worse by interfering in the dogs' process of working out their own issues (within reason, of course). The great thing about male dogs is generally, they will squabble and 10 minutes later it's all over and they're pals again....females however are not so forgiving.
