Hello,
My Mom recently adopted a Hurricane Katrina Refugee named "Scottie," a truly loveable Scottish Terrier whom my Mom cherishes with all of her heart. A Katrina Refugee herself, she feels they truly "rescued" each other during this difficult time.
Despite her efforts to move to Atlanta and put her life back together, I recently had to admit Mom to Peachford Hospital for alcoholism, post-traumatic stress, and severe depression. She is recovering quite well, but unfortunately, she had to leave Sottie behind in her 1 bedroom apartment. I would have gladly taken him in myself, but my apartment will not allow pets, and even if I tried to sneak him in for a while, my roommate is horribly allergic to pet dander. Soon my Mom will be transferred to a halfway house for 3-6 months, and they definitely will not allow pets, even to visit. Consequently, my Mom will lose her apartment, because neither of us can continue to afford the rent, and she will continue to be out of work while in treatment.
I visit Scottie twice daily to feed and walk him, but I know that's not enough. He barks and cries the entire time I'm away, and Mom's neighbors are complaining to the property manager. I have tried tirelessly for the past 3 weeks to find someone to take Scottie in while my mom finishes her treatment, but no one is willing to be a foster parent--if they can't adopt him permanently, they are unwilling to take him at all. What can I do?? I'm desperate at this point. If Mom finds out she's lost Scottie permanently, it will simply break her heart beyond repair. She's been through so much since the hurricane, and I'm terribly afraid losing Scottie will be like putting the last nail in her coffin.
Is there ANYONE amongst your volunteers who can take Scottie in for a little while?? I will be more than happy to volunteer my services in exchange. If not, I understand, but would you have any advice or referrals? PLEASE HELP!!!!
Thank-you so much for your advice. I am grateful for all that you and your fellow volunteers do!
Sincerely,
Mark E. Bishop
