There's no real training period, belly bands are not to be used as training aids, they are merely "save your furniture/sanity" aids. It is really dog dependent on whether or not he'll continue to mark while banded. I have one here that absolutely will not mark when banded, and another who could care less (I also have a female marker that must wear a diaper). If your old guy is in the latter catagory, skip the belly bands all together and buy diapers. You just unfold them once (do not open the side tab area), wrap around the waist & secure with masking tape. They work great, they catch all the pee & pull the wetness away from the skin.

I have a brain-damaged epilpetic dog who will never be housebroken. I use diapers for him. If you need a pic to see what I'm talking about, let me know.
