Riding
“Mom wear are my boots?” asked April. “ I don’t know. Try the bathroom and in your closet” I yelled up the stairs. I looked at the clock. “5:20. We’re late to the barn.” I murmured to myself. I picked up the phone and called Beth. “Hi this is the Cannon residents, Beth speaking”. “Hey, Beth. Want to go for a ride?” I said. “Maybe, but I just woke up and I need to get the girls up, clean stalls and feed the horses. You know how long that takes.” Beth said with a yawn. “You just got up! I’ve been up for an hour and a half but I guess that is because I have a racing stable. Would you like me and the kids to bring the horses over there so we could help you do chores and ride at your place?” I asked. “Well I over slept this morning because my alarm did not go off the battery was dead and sure if you and the girls want to come over then ridding it is. But I need some help with chores and if one of the girls does not have a horse I would be glad to let her ride one of mine!” Beth said still sleepy. “Hey what if we all ride your horse today and mine another day? All I have to do today is lounge Glory besides when you come to my house you can ride one of the race horses.” I replied. “Sure, we can ride my horses today and yours another day. Also maybe since I always keep a casserole in my freezer after we go for a ride we can come to your house to lounge Glory and I’ll pop in a casserole for lunch.” Beth said, now not so sleepy. “Ok when would you like us to show up?” I asked her glancing at the clock witch now said 5:30. “Oh, is 6:00 ok? That will give me time to give the kids a bath, get them dressed and get myself ready. Oh speaking of Kids I can hold one in the saddle but two is a little tricky would you or one of your older girls be able to hold one?” Beth said fully awake now. “Sure, Katie likes little kids and she is a good rider, she could hold Saddie for you. Oh, Is it ok if I bring Ashley over in her PJs and could I also bring our dogs, Coco and Chocolate, they would watch out for rattle snakes.” I said. “Sure you can bring Coco and Chocolate over. My horses are pretty calm but I know your dogs can since the snakes. Ashley can come over in her PJs if you want you can drop her off with some clothes and I will put her in the bath with the girls and then dress her. Is 6:00 ok?” Beth said now very alert. “Yes, fine with me. When we get there I will drop off Kate and Ashley and Kate can bath them so you can do your chores. Ok?” I said. “Ok, I better go now so I can wake up Saddie and Kelsi you know how Saddie gets when
She has just been woken up and I want her to be nice today. So I’ll see you in 20 minutes. Bye!” Beth said. “Bye” I said hanging up the phone.
20 min later.
“Hey” I said when Beth opened the door. Saddie was standing beside her and she was
holding Kelsi. “Are you ready to go to the barn? Katie can watch the kids up here if you want.” I said, Katie was standing beside me holding Ashley and Ashley’s dipper bag the dogs were at her heals. “Ok, I am ready to go to the barn I only have 9 stalls to muck out, 28 horses to feed and 7 horses to take in from the paddocks. It should only take us 45 minutes. Do you think you can get the girls a bath and dress them, Katie?” Beth said. “Sure I can. If I can hold onto a mad Thoroughbred’s lead rope I bet I can dress 3 little kids.” Katie replied with a smile. “Ok, Saddie’s clothes are on her bed, her boots are in the mud room and her hair stuff is in the drawer in the bathroom if you want to fix her hair. She should be still. Kelsi’s clothes are in her clothes hang down in her closet and her boots are in the mud room also.” Beth said a look of concern on her face. “Ok, now that we have that done we need to get the barn under control, April and Amber are already down there cleaning the stalls so let’s go. Oh, and Katie, just use a washcloth to bath Ashley and when you get ready to bring them to the barn you can use the barn stroller I’m leaving it by the door. Ok? Bye, see you at the barn.” I said grabbing Beth’s arm before she said anything else. “Oh and Katie you do not have to shampoo the girls hair or use soap but just put them in the water to splash off and put Kelsi in her blue bath seat. The wash clothes are in the cabinet to the right of the sink. I think that is all, Bye” Beth said before the door was shut.
At The Barn
Once we were at the barn I said, “Go play dogs.” Then I asked, “What should I do?” “You can start bring in the horses from paddocks 1, 3, & 4 and I’ll go feed. Are the girls mucking the stalls?” Beth replied. “Yes, but they maybe done by now. What size halters should I get and which horses should I bring to which stalls?” I said. “ Well let’s first go find the girls and see if they are done. Ok?” Beth said. “Sure, I bet we should head to your office and see if they are waiting for us in there.” I replied. “Well, I don’t think they are in the office because it is still locked but they maybe waiting outside of my office.” Beth told me walking towards the office. We went down the aisle and turn right at the first turn, a little ways down was the office with the girls sitting in front of the door. “How long does it take to drop off Baby Ashley and Kate and pick up Miss Cannon.” April said jokingly. “Well apparently longer than it takes you two to clean nine stalls.” I said with a laugh. “Well do you two feel up to Bring in horses or feeding horses? If not I have some Ice tea, soda and water in my office mini fridge.” Beth said. “I want a drink then I can do whatever you want me to do.” April said. “I want to bring in horses!” Amber said. “I’ll do whatever you want me to.” I said. “Ok, let me unlock my office” Beth said pulling out keys from her pocket. “Ok, here there are” she said as she unlocked it and went in. “What do you want to drink I have Dr. Pepper, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, 7up, Sweet Tea, Un-sweet Tea and Water.” Beth said as she opened the fridge for Me, Amber and April. “I’ll take a DP” April said. “I’ll take one too” I said. “May I have a Diet Coke? I am watching my weight because I do not want to get to heavy to be a jockey.” Amber said. “Dig in” Beth said backing away. “I think I herd Katie and the Babies coming toward the office.” Beth said after everyone got a drink. “Hey” Katie said coming in the office with Ashley and Kelsi in the stroller and Saddie right beside her. “Want a drink?” Beth asked. “No thanks I got one before I left the house. I hope you don’t mind.” Katie replied. “No, I do not mind.” Beth said. “We need to get the chores done so we can go for a ride.” Beth told everyone. “Ok tell us what to do.” I said. “Who wants to watch Saddie, Kelsi and Ashley?” I asked. “I will if you want” April said with a smile. “Ok you can” Beth said to April. “Cowgirl you can go with Amber and get all the horses from the paddocks except for the mini’s put them in any empty stall. Oh, But do get Bliz, Saddie will ride her. April you can watch the babies and Katie you can help me feed.” Beth said. “Brake up and do your job, meet at the office when your done with your jobs” Beth said in a joking voice.
Jobs Done
Beth walked in with Katie. She walked over to the mini fridge and got some water then asked Katie what she wanted. Katie got a Dr. Pepper then they sat down beside Me and Amber. April and “The Babies” were playing with fake horses in the corner. “Ok, is everyone done?” I asked everyone Said yes in reply. “Ok, let me tell you what horses you are going to ride; Cowgirl will ride Dolly with baby Ashley, Dolly rides Western and Bareback. April you will ride Baybee, she rides both English and western but I’m starting her on jumping. Katie you will ride Butterfly, she rides western and does Barrel Racing. Amber you will ride Sonny, she rides English and lead Saddie who will ride Bliz. I will ride Molly with Kelsi. Any questions?” Beth said. “Miss. Cannon may I ride angel instead?” Amber asked hopeful. “Sure, if you can handle her. She is a racer.” Beth replied before asking if there was any more questions. No one had a question. “Let’s saddle up then.” Beth said. Everyone left to go saddle up and Beth asked “Cowgirl, do you want me to go get our horses and you watch the little girls?” “Sure” I told her.
The Start Of The Ride
30 minutes later (8:00) we were at the start of the x-country trial with the dogs. Beth asked if everyone one was ready and they were. “Please stay in a group of at least 2 and at the end of this trail we will end up close to the barn it’s a little bit like a circle. When you get to the barn Un-tack your horse, groom your horse and get a drink from my office and wait there for the others” Beth told everyone. Then we started off April in the lead and the rest on her heals.
The Ride
When we came to the first jump, a log about 1ft. high, everyone stopped to the side of the trail. April circled Baybee then cantered toward the log, tucked her legs and leaped over the jump. She then took five strides before April turn her and trotted back to wait for us. “Good” Beth said with a pleased look on her face. “She is a natural!” April said, her eyes sparkling. The rest of us went on the path around the log. Next, we came to a large, open meadow with some jumps. “Can me, April and Kate race?” Amber asked. “Sure, Angel would probably love to race but not to fast.” Beth said. Amber won as expected and we moved on. We left the meadow and went into some more woods. “I can see the barn!” Katie cried. “Yes, but what about that log? There is no path around it.” Amber stated. When we got closer I saw that she was right and Beth saw it too. “Well, we can go back the way we came or we can get off, let Katie, April, and Amber jump it then hand them Saddie, Kelsi and Ashley then Jump it our selves and let Bliz, Coco, and Chocolate follow.” Beth told us. “I like the second idea.” Amber said. “Well I think that’s the best chose so lets jump.” Beth said in a funny tone, “Amber, April and Katie jump over and then get off”. April, Katie and Amber jumped there horses, got off and got the babies then me and Beth jumped the log with Bliz and the dogs following. We all mounted back up, went to the barn, groomed our horse and met at Beth’s office.
Back at the Barn
“April?” Beth asked. “Present.” April answered. “Then we must all be here.” I said. “You guys all I need to do before we head to your house is get the casserole out of the freezer and get some baby food from the fridge. It should only take a minute. Can you load Kelsi and Saddie in there seats, Katie? Your mom and sisters can go ahead and we will meet them at your house, ok?” Beth said. “Sure” Katie said sounding very happy. “We will be right over” Beth said to me “Bye”.
At My House
“Almost time to eat!” I yelled up the stairs to the girls. “I’ll get Saddie” Katie yelled. “I’ll get Kelsi” April Hollered, “I guess I get Ashley!” Amber hollered. “Don’t forget to wash your hands” Beth told them. So they ran in the other room, Washed there hands and came to sit down.
The Prayer
“Bless this food and keep us safe” Katie Finished the prayer. So everyone could eat and they did.
The Cannon’s Leave
“Bye” Beth yelled from the car window as they drove away. Before she had left she had given the oldest three 10 dollars each and they yelled “Thank You”
