There could be various reasons for the fainting LCD panels:
##1) first of all natural aging -- it's not clear how old is yours LCD, though I assume no more than 2-3 years, which is quite acceptable. So if you say machine works fine with external monitor, the video adaptor itself is OK, so it leads us into the LCD, on the way you may check the
##2)actual connection between motherboard and LCD ( i.e. you ned _basic_ diassebmle). If you're able to see the picture in colors correctly even though faint -- then the control is fine, and you might think of LCD power connector if it's loose. I'm not sure how it's on Vibrant, but on Vivante the LCD control connector is on left side, and LCD power connector is on right side (along with microphone connector). So try to shake it / or re-connect it. If this is not the case -- then it points inside LCD assembly, there it comes to
##3) LCD invertor -- this thing is what really feeds the LCD with high voltage, so if it's damaged -- then this is the end, though you may want to bring it to repair shop and they might replace it -- it should be pretty much standard part.
In all of the cases if you want to check it yourself, you need to do some disassembling. The results are all yours. While the basic is simple, the LCD diassebmly is quite delicate, though not complicated too, but both require some confidence and patience. You may check:

also ask on transmonde eGroup if anybody diassembled Vibrant:

Hope it helps.
