Once I was also curious about external sound for the laptop, and I've searched dejanews for the PCMCIA sound etc., and got quite a lot results, but for some reason I've saved only one that reffers to:

for PCMCIA sound card that would provide 'near-pro sound quality sufficient for decent CD-production' (as said in mess) -- though they mentioned it might be expensive.

Anyway -- check it out! Also depending on your needs and plans -- you may check ensoniq (very reputable in sound world), and also you may consider external USB sound card (also possible if you're sure on your USB).
