If you primary concern is DOS-applications, the answer is short -- run it in Full-Screen Mode. To do so, you pres Alt+Enter while in the DOS-application window. You can try this with a MSDOSPrompt-window itself, just spawn it and then press Alt+Enter, to set it back to windowed mode press Alt+Enter again.
To make it permanent you may change the properties while in the DOS-app-window (look at tool-bar, and select Screen-tab, then set FullScreen)
