I don't know whether this applies to the Vibrant or to Vivante only, but FWIW I recall there was a post here a few months back where someone noticed ASE had upgraded their BIOS for them, when they sent their Transmonde in for repair. It was after Transmonde went out of business.
The BIOS on my Vivante says
SystemSoft BIOS for Intel 440BX version 1.01 (2482-00)
Copyright 1983-1998
and it has no trouble at all with an 18-gig drive. The CMOS setup screen reports the full size of the drive.
