I'd first check out in which operating mode you modem is currently set. It might be set to operate in other than V90 mode. You could check it from the log file( if there's one in windows directory) or from a terminal program (HyperTerminal, or kermit) send a command to your modem: ATI
You may then use AT strings to set up your modem to operate with correct speed, and also sometimes you could enter some init strings that usually required for your modem type to work optimally -- check this on modem manufact site if you know it ( and you could post a link to this sitefor others as well and I alos add it on transmodesos.net)

How to Use Modem AT Commands in HyperTerminal

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 95


To use AT commands in HyperTerminal, follow these steps:

1.Start HyperTerminal (Hypertrm.exe).

2.Enter a name for the connection (for example, Test) in the Name box.

3.Click an icon for the connection in the Icon box, and then click OK.

4.In the Connect Using box, click Direct To Com X (where X is the port your modem is
connected to) and then click OK.

5.Verify the settings on the Port Settings tab and then click OK.

6.On the File menu, click Properties. On the Settings tab, click ASCII Setup.

7.Click the Send Line Ends With Line Feeds and Echo Typed Characters Locally check
boxes to select them.

8.Click OK, and then click OK. You can now type AT commands.

9.Quit HyperTerminal. When you are prompted "Save session ?" click Yes if you
want to save the session so that you can use AT commands at another time.
