Hi,

I have recently bought a 2nd hand Thinkpad 600E and there seems to be some problem with the modem. It is the internal one that comes with the laptop and seems to be installed OK. It is on COM3, which isn't in the list of devices but I believe that is OK. Windows 2000 reports that the modem is working properly and there are no conflicts. Even the thinkpad modem program seems to show that it is communicating with the modem (via the lights etc.). The problem is that when I try to dial, all I hear through the speakers is a scratchy dial tone for a split second followed by static. The program reports that there is no dial tone.

Could the modem be stuffed, or am I missing something. The guy I bought it off told me it all worked fine and I only checked that windows thought that. Now he has conviently gone on holidays. I'm sure that the PC was upgraded from probably windows 98 to 2000 at some stage.
