I think it has a lot to do with which IMM you have in. Pre pentium II was probably TX chipset, after was BX - I don't think the TX was ACPI compliant. I upgraded to a 366 celeron with the BX chipset IMM and recently switched to windows2000 - hibernate works fine, as done standby to disk (which are the same thing, but implmented differently).

standby to ram has never worked under either 98 or 2000 - only under linux
