Sounds like the power adapter is detecting a short circuit. This happened to me when I shorted out the power supply circuitry in the back left-hand portion of the mainboard. Have you been inside the case? If so, have you noticed any smoke, flashing, or popping? I dropped a screw and had all the above. Luckily, the short only affected the power circuitry, not the HDD, RAM, etc. Required replacement of the mainboard, which ASE did promptly.
