To answer Kevin's first question (screen flickering):
I had the same problem as you and Jeffrey Rice. Transmonde did not have a 13" screen so they sold me a 14" one for $99. The flickering came back, so Transmonde replaced my ENTIRE LAPTOP, keeping the 14" screen I had just upgraded to. I always was impressed with their commitment to taking care of customers. I have not had any further problems with flickering. I suggest getting ASE to get on the problem IMMEDIATELY, in case they run out of screens.

To answer the second question (heat sink):
That material is a heat transfer compound. Notice the heat sink has an extension that goes over to the fan area.
