update:

I seem to have reached a working config again.
For the curious, here's what I did:

- read usenet/www. somebody said to check netgod.net/x/

- go to netgod.net

- download (almost) everything there that says "3.3.3"

- install all these debs with "dpkg -i ...."

now X works again. I didn't have to run XF86Setup.
(Actually XF86Setup WOULDN"T run!) I still use the
XF86Config file from my old C&T65555 computer, and
things seem to work fine so far. I still don't know
the allowed clock ranges for the C&T69000, but
nothing has blown up yet.
