The reason I put in TWO pieces was to avoid stressing the keyboard from the "strip" down the middle of the keyboard.
My concern was that the extra thickness along the strip might induce a fracture along that line. I wasn't sure of the purpose of the strip, so I didn't attempt to remove it. The two-piece arrangement gives a nice solid feel.
