i was there in 53 and 54. Dorm 3 number 18. Johnson was the captain and cheshire was second in command. petty officer of our dorm was Mellish and his leading hands were Potts and Adams. Number one dorm was Chang Jamison, PO with leading hands Arnold and I think, Don Pickford from Slough. Over the other side was one and two dorms and I seem to recall Roger Peck as one PO and a big fellow called Horne as the other. It's all a long time ago. Names that I remember were mostly from dorm three - Church, Brazier, Taylor, Coleman, Shipman, Chalcroft (he was my sheperd), Henderson (he and I had a dust up in the ablutions). Other names that pop up are Laughton, Young,Gibson,Tick,Eric Acti(the first black man I ever met),Lychfield, there were quite a few. I absconded with a lad called 'Horse' Bridgeman in 53 but was recaptured in Birmingham, I remember I had to scrub the half deck with a toothbrush for that escapade. Dally was the gym master, I always thought he was a sadist. Jim Gregory was instructor of seamen 2. Gaffer Hill was sports master and I played cricket for the school at Stanley Park in Blackpool. My major memories are of an institution that operated on terror tactics perpetrated by the boys and I still have bloody nightmares about Ronuk and the infamous 'deckwork'. Maybe something like the Akbar should exist today, it would surely sort out some of these so called hardcases. Do you know if the building is still intact or if the original stone ship is still there?
best wishes
