Subject: Spoilers: Two to Go/Grave (i.e., season six finale) Speculation for season seven
aka, Dawn: Does anyone give a damn?
It occurs to me that in the final hours of season six (okay, the final seven and a half minutes), we saw the extremely obvious birth of a new Dawn arc. And should I add spoiler space inside this post? I fear Deepa, so I will.

Anyway, Buffy apologizes for being over-protective and motherish, Dawn gets a sword to call her own, and the sisters face off against the forces of cut-rate Raimi. Looks like we're being primed for Dawn to start taking a more Slayerish role in the next season, kind of a season-one Buffy mach II...but I hear no noise about this. I see no pre-emptive fic, I feel no trembling on the rails.
Granted, I haven't been listening very hard, but is the general consensus that we just don't care? I, for one, may or may not care depending on how it's handled, but I'm kind of interested by how completely this arc has been overshadowed by the other stories. Well, okay, they were big stories. But this one kind of pleases me in a neat-narrative-package sense, because it would be a return to some of the same themes as season one: girl comes of age in mean old world, takes up arms and starts swinging.
Could be good. Or not. Depending.

I've been thinking the same thing for a little while, about 3-4 months before the finale. I hope they do try something like this.
The major complaints many people have about Dawn, I believe, is that she's bratty, whiny, all those adjectives that describe a fifteen year old girl. Which is, I believe what Joss set out to do. I didn't care much for Dawn until Buffy's birthday in season 5 (can't remember the name). You know, the scene, "Is this blood"? After that, she became a more sympathetic character in my eyes. The only problem, though, is that they didn't further that plot line this season. Or, you could argue that they did, but it was overshadowed by so many other, darker plots going on at the same time.

I believe that that would be a great direction for them to go in. Especially since Sarah won't be there after next year, and apparantly everybody else (except Anya) has already signed on for a season eight.
Michelle seems to be a good actor, what little scope they've given her thus far, and I think that this would be a good direction to take.

Not me, for one. I have issues about her that go far beyond the whining brat irritation, and I have no interest in Dawn the Vampire Slayer. Of course, if they decided to shoot Spike the Vampire Layer... hm, anyway!

Not if you've already made it clear in the subject of your post, but thank you for being so sensitive about it in any case!

Aww. I'm wounded. No really, I'm only a bitch on the list. Over here, I'm just a board-pimp.

Five days, three responses. (One of which was to clear Deepa's good name.) I think we've answered the question pretty definitively.
Consensus is...Dawn: we don't give a damn.
Fair enough.

I'm a bit slow in answering but yeah, that about sums up my opinion. On a related note, someone on another board posed the question of whether people would continue to watch the show if SMG left and Dawn became the lead. Answers: Two people said yes and thought it might be a good move, five said they'd give it a try just to see but expressed serious misgivings, and one said definitely not.

I haven't replied before as I've only just caught up to "Grave". I give a damn. I like Dawn. She can be bratty, but given what she's gone through, she's already proved to be remarkably robust. I cheered her on in "Wrecked" when she fought that demon, broken arm and all. Go Dawnie!
We've had two clear hints that we might be moving towards DtVS. Coquette's mentioned one. The other is the whole "built of Buffy blood" stuff which might indicate innate slayerness. Some fanfics picked up on the latter; I read a few post-"Gift" fics that picked up on this explicitly. I've only just started on post-"Grave" pieces so I can't say I've seen any more recent work.
Would I watch DtVS? My immediate reaction is to ask "But where does Buffy go?" I don't know that I could stand a third death or a one-way trip through a portal or, heaven help us, ascension to higher beinghood. Maybe she could retire or choose to leave Sunnydale while little sis holds the fort.
That said, I now believe that Mutant Enemy walk on water. Which isn't to say they don't get their feet wet now and then (Willow with the shakes! Ben IS Glory!) but they've managed to pull off all sorts of stunts that I never believed could be done well or at all. I mean, these people managed to completely re-engineer the entire series in "Fool for Love" (or at least, that was the ep that forced this lazy viewer to review and reinterpret all that had gone before, not just Spike stuff). And they gave us the lamest possible way to defeat Willow in "Grave" and I still bawled my eyes out! Bastards! How dare they manipulate me so!
So if ME think DtVS is feasible, then maybe they'll find a way to do it plausibly. And then maybe I'll want to watch.
