Admittedly I don't know too much about Falun Gong. It sounds kooky to me: I beleive the leader of the cult/New Religious Movement stated in an interview in "Time" something about UFOs, which sounds nuts to me, and does give the warning bell a little tinkle. I am a buddhist, but Falun Gong sounds like, hmmm, watch out. It looks kooky.

However, I am indeed worried about Murdoch currying favour from Beijing. On the morning of January 1st, 2000, I was in Tian'anmen Square when suddenly at least several hundred policemen descended into the square cutting off public access to most of the Square. Apparently this massive show of force was due to the arrests of six people practicing Falun Gong in the square shortly before I arrived.

Admittedly, Beijing has every right to fear the rise of such a religion and organisation which is not controlled by the state. Plotting and meeting in the churches are partially what led to the collapse of the German 'Democratic' Republic (East Germany).

However, China has a big market - over one billion potential customers. It's understandable that Murdoch is eyeing China. I reckon the character "Elliot Carver" in the "Tomorrow Never Dies" Bond film was an amalgamation of Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch.
