Subject: PEA: Love Chemical

Hey all, just dropping by to let you in on some of my latest research.

I've long noticed that amphetamine and being in love feel a lot alike; speed gives you more of an adrenaline rush, but otherwise the subjective psychological effects are very similar.

I recently discovered why, while reading in neuroscience. There's a neurotransmitter called phenethylamine (or PEA) that gathers in greater quantities in the brains of people in love. And the PEA molecule looks a hell of a lot like dextroamphetamine; take a look (forgive my chicken-scratch molecular drawings):

This is PEA; it's a very simple, relatively mild sympathomimetic.

This is dextroamphetamine; it's the PEA molecule with a methyl group tacked onto the alpha carbon.

Pretty neat, huh? I'm not sure what the methyl group does that makes d-amphetamine stronger than PEA; it may have something to do with blocking the re-uptake of adrenaline and dopamine, which both PEA and speed release in large quantities.
