John and I have been thinking a lot about our age group and not finding many cool people there. We went to a Mountain Goats show and were easily the oldest people in the venue. I think we're even older than John Darnielle and Peter I-don't-remember-his-last-name.

Of course, there weren't many cool people at the show either. They were young and drunk and hormonal, y'know. They were talking. Loudly. And a lot. Darnielle reprimanded them a few times, then lost his temper and put down his guitar and sang a capella without the mike. Then he strode into the crowd, still singing. That kind of shushed them.

But I was amazed at the spoiled bratty behavior of most of the offenders. I suppose that makes me old and crotchety. But I laughed in this one kid's face when he huffed that he'd never buy another Mountain Goats album, and shook my head when a girl, whose invitation to an afterparty was politely refused by the artists, stormed out of the club.

What the fuck? How on earth do these kids think their silly tantrums and vows could have any meaning whatsoever? I hesitate to say it, but does this generation really have the self-absorption problems that we've been reading about for the last five or so years?
