The sooner we learn to take care of ourselves, the better off we'll be as this current system crashes. Frankenseeds aren't the only worry we have; destructive industrialized agriculture that's destroying the fragile topsoil of the farmbelt and a conspiracy to use markets and debt to bankrupt the family farmers and send them to the dustbin of history is also imperiling our food supply. But the megacorporations will not suceed. We are at Peak Oil Production; this is the most petroleum products this planet will ever see. Oil, apart from fueling the tractors and the food distribution infrastructure, is used to make the fertilizers and pesticides needed for industrial agriculture. Even worse, pollutants from our petroleum based society are systematically contaminating the water supply and soil to the point that our breadbasket could be transformed into a vast polluted desert.

Grow your own food. A combination of Organics and home powered hydroponics seems to be the way to go. Buy non hybridized seeds, set up a home power source of some kind or move to a town with a local power plant. A south facing greenhouse with mirrored coverings to deploy for night to use lighting. Hydroponics offers the possiblilty of hypergrowth and nutrition qualities far superior to farm grown crops. You'll achieve near food independence and sell the surplus for a profit.
