Controversial evangelist brings "miracle water" to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Miracle water -- or health hazard?

Evangelist Leroy Jenkins, whose allegedly healing water has been labeled contaminated by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, is staging a revival through Sunday at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Amber Ginyard, an event coordinator at the center, told The Charlotte Observer that Jenkins hopes to offer the water to worshippers attending the revival.

Jenkins declined to talk with the newspaper about the water, and his secretary declined to say whether the water would be offered at the event in exchange for donations.

The Ohio agriculture department has ordered Jenkins to stop distributing the water, which he says has healing properties. The state says tests have shown the water to contain coliform bacteria, which comes from human and animal waste and can cause serious illness.

The water is pumped from a well on Jenkins' former Healing Waters Cathedral property in Delaware, Ohio.

Ginyard said her office was unaware of the faith healer's problems with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. And convention center general manager Ted Lewis said he would wait to see a sample of the water for himself before deciding whether to allow it to be made available to Jenkins' followers.

Lewis said he was concerned about whether the water competes with the center's food and beverage offerings.

Jenkins has been in a running battle with the Ohio agriculture department over his water and its safety.

He was fined $200 last year because he didn't have a license to sell the water. Rather than getting a license, he agreed to stop selling the water.

Later, the department used undercover agents to purchase the water from Jenkins. Again, it contained coliform, the department said.

Told by The Observer that the water might be available in Charlotte, Ohio Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Melanie Wilt said her office notified federal and North Carolina health officials.

A West Virginia woman became ill in late 2001 after drinking Jenkins' water, Wilt said.

Jenkins has said that God told him in 1977 to drill a well 100 feet deep. The "miracle water" comes from that well, he says.
