Subject: Michael Savage -- What the love child of Ann Coulter and Bobby Knight would look like...

I heard this guy, once, on the local AM station that broadcasts the national right-wing pity party. Can someone tell me when obnoxiousness became a family value? Barry Goldwater probably generates several thousand RPM when this man's loggorhea splats onto the airwaves.

Savage family values

DARTANYAN BROWN, director of instructional technology at the Branson School in Marin, used to make a practice of monitoring hate radio. But nothing prepared Brown for what he heard driving home from school while listening to KSFO-AM's Michael Savage one day last September.

Savage was discussing his proposal to round up and incarcerate the Bay Area's homeless when he made reference to a program at Branson through which students volunteer to distribute sandwiches to the homeless in San Francisco.

"You can get the kids from Marin to go in there with them at night," Savage said during the Sept. 21 broadcast. "The girls from Branson can go in and maybe get raped ... because they seem to like the excitement of it. There's always the thrill and possibility they'll be raped in a Dumpster while giving out a turkey sandwich."

Branson was furious and demanded an apology. KSFO general manager Michael Luckoff, who oversees all of Disney's S.F. radio stations, told us he didn't care for the way Savage expressed his opinion, but he defended the comment: "[Savage] had reason to believe this was a dangerous situation to put young people into and didn't think it was a wise idea, and that was the premise for his comments," Luckoff told us. But this was no slip of the tongue. During another show, according to an item in the San Jose Mercury News, Savage referred to the Branson girls as "fresh white nookie."

Luckoff apologized to the school, but Savage himself has yet to apologize, and he declined to be interviewed for this story.

Here are some more quotes from the guy who claims to have coined the phrase "compassionate conservative." Except where noted, they were taken directly from radio broadcasts during the period of Sept. 6 through Sept. 15.

On women "I'm beginning to think that women should be denied the vote. Their hormones rage; they are too emotional." (as quoted in San Jose Mercury News, Nov. 6, 1998)

On whites no longer being the majority in California "Now the liberals are celebrating, of course. They will soon find out they will be shoved aside so that the power can be taken by the Asians and the Hispanics."

On how this happened "With the population that has emerged, since they [Hispanics] breed like rabbits, in many cases the whites will become a minority in their own nation.... the white people don't breed as often for whatever reason. I guess many homosexuals are involved. That is also part of the grand plan, to push homosexuality to cut down on the white race."

On who's taking over "The nation is being taken over by the freaks, the cripples, the perverts, and the mental defectives."

On Bobby Knight and Wen Ho Lee "[Coaching is] the last bastion of the white heterosexual male ... and we need men like Bobby Knight that made America great. If we had a Bobby Knight in the Justice Department, we would know where the hard drives are, and instead of Wen Ho Lee going 'ho ho ho,' Wen Ho Lee would be going sizzle, sizzle, sizzle."

On gay parenting "Fat lesbians are anti-family." (S.F. Examiner, Jan. 8, 1996)

On gays "Gays bore the hell out of me. They're the least important members of our society."

On the gay-rights movement "I'm not going to roll over to the pink swastika; I will not bow down to the pink swastika."
