Subject: And so it begins...

I think Senator Byrd's comments are apt now:

"Today I weep for my country. No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent peacekeeper. ... Around the globe, our friends mistrust us, our word is disputed, our intentions are questioned.

"We flaunt our superpower status with arrogance. After war has ended the United States will have to rebuild much more than the country of Iraq. We will have to rebuild America's image around the globe."

When this is all over, we'll have body bags full of U.S. soldiers and many more crippled by gas and bio attack. It's sad that so many have to die for Bush's vanity and thirst for revenge. There's little doubt that we'll win; but at what price, and for what reason? We won't find that great stashed arsenal of Weapons of Mass Destruction hidden away in the Iraqi desert; it doesn't exist. We'll find a few hollow rockets and warheads, and that's it; most of what Saddam had was likely uncovered by the U.N. inspectors. This war is more about vengeance for Daddy Bush than anything else--and, probably, oil. Despite all the official assurances that Iraqi oil profits will go to benefit the people of Iraq, you can bet that our corporations will be pocketing some of the cash; with the Oil Man and Vice Oil Man in control of the country, that's as sure as tax breaks for the rich.
