Subject: CD Burning Software

Most CD burning software drives me nuts for one reason: it won't let you burn at 1X. 2X is the lowest on most, and the default is generally 4X or higher.

But why burn at 1X? It's terribly slow. Because music burned at 1X sounds better than music burned at higher speeds; the lower the writing speed, the fewer errors that're written to the CD, and ergo the more faithful the sound is to your original. There's a myth out there that digital signals don't degrade and are always reproduced accurately--hey, it's all 1s and 0s. Bullshit. It's true that a 6th generation digital recording will sound worlds better than a 6th generation analog recording; but you'll certainly notice a drop in sound quality, and depending on your equipment and writing speed, you could wind up with a CD that sounds like it was recorded underwater.

It seems that most manufacturers of CD burning software don't understand this, or don't care.
