Spire Comics! Now that takes me back. I remember their comic books, Steve. They were laughed at by Jesus People as being too unspiritual and simplistic. In Los Angeles, spiritual warfare existed between Jesus People and the Teen Challenge-Bill Bright-Nicki Cruz crowd. We of the Jesus People considered those "Christians" to be legalists. Teen Challenge really hyped Nicki Cruz and I saw him speak one night at Melodyland. Cruz was an intense guy who told great stories of life in the hood. Of course by today's standards of life in the hood, Cruz would be a nobody.

What really kicked ass for me back then was when Barry McQuire became a Christian. Barry was the guy whose sang Eve of Destruction. One night Melodyland had this fabulous rally where Barry sang Eve of Destruction with his band and the song was not Christianized. It was in its original, raw, powerful form. Barry and his band were bikers. He was a big, tough-looking sonofabitch who could sing. After he sang and testified, none other than Hal Lindsey took the stage and just fucking brought the house to its knees with this sermon on the Rapture.

When Lindsey and McQuire were done dishing up Apocalypse par excellence, the whole church was just fucking on fire! The unsaved were piled up around the circular stage. We who were working as volunteer counselors were overwhelmed. Hal, Barry, and Pastor Wilkerson were working with the volunteers around the altar. Even Walter Martin, who was in the audience, came up and worked around the altar. It was pure New Testament power. I swear to God if I could have stayed in that moment forever, I would still be a Christian.

But the service ended and I went back to being a mere mortal. And then there were those crappy Spire comic books that I found so goddamned embarassing. Ya' know, you work and study to be an effective witness and then you get this smarmy Hansi crap and you wonder why God allows it.
I threw away the Hansi comic book someone gave me. It was ridiculous. Later, I met a German woman who had actually been captured by the Russians. Her stories were horrible. Anyone who knew the truth about what went on would never have allowed Hansi to be printed.

At least you could hand out a Chick tract to somebody and it had credibility (I was only 15 when I got saved, cut me some slack!). The Nicki Cruz and Hansi comics were just plain stupid, even clownish.

Anyway, thanks for the memory Steve. Maranantha!
