Subject: au posts men's soccer schedule

so, i'm the only contributor to this board. I am posting it so i can read it back to myself. By the way, your AU Eagles Men's soccer team was ranked #14 in Division 1 last year. Better than any other Division 1 ranking for any other PL team, I believe.

American University Announces 2002 Men’s Soccer Schedule
Defending Patriot League Champions feature one of nation’s toughest slates

June 27, 2002

Head Coach Todd West has prepared a difficult schedule for the Eagles in the 2002 season.

WASHINGTON — Coming off of one of the most successful campaigns in the history of the program, American University men’s soccer coach Todd West has announced the schedule for the 2002 season. One of the nation’s toughest, the slate includes three early-season tournaments, and seven teams that competed in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.

“At American University we have a reputation for playing one of the more competitive schedules in the country and 2002 is certainly no different,” said West, who begins his third season at the helm of the American program. “With seven teams from last year’s NCAA tournament on our schedule, we will be tested each and every time we step on the field. I think we are up to the challenge and we have set our sights on defending our Patriot League Championship.”

The 2001 Patriot League Champion Eagles advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in school history. American made an improbable run to the Sweet 16, where it fell to eventual National Champion North Carolina, 1-0, in overtime.

American opens the 2002 campaign by hosting the second annual D.C. College Cup at Reeves Field. The classic format will pit the Eagles against Georgetown in the season-opener on August 30, followed by a match with Howard on September 1.

The second tournament of the young season will see American take part in the UConn/adidas Classic in Storrs, Conn., where the Eagles will square off with 2000 National Champion Connecticut in the opener, and then face Boston College in the second match.

A rematch of the 2001 NCAA First Round awaits American in the Penn State Nike Classic, as the Eagles are reunited with Ohio State in the opener on September 13. American defeated the Buckeyes, 2-1, in the NCAAs a year ago to advance to the second round. The Eagles will then meet host Penn State in the second game of the classic.

Regional rivalries are rekindled again this season as American faces off with Old Dominion (Sept. 18), Virginia Commonwealth (Sept. 21), and Loyola (Oct. 2). The Eagles have two marquee road contests — facing Princeton on October 9 in Princeton, N.J., and Virginia in Charlottesville on October 26. In addition, American will host Adelphi on October 19.

The Patriot League slate features three home dates, including the league opener with local rival Navy on September 25. Bucknell comes to town on October 6, followed by Holy Cross, which American defeated in last year’s championship match, on October 12.

American University recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League in which it captured league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. The University fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.

American became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, the University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.

I'll watch a PL soccer game if there is nothing else happening but I don't follow it closely. I assume American has a history of good soccer teams. Do they offer scholarships for soccer? Since AU is new to the league, who do you see being the competition over the next 3-4 years? And a basketball question, is former basketball coach Thatcher still with the college in some capacity? If not, do you know what happened to him?
