BODY:
Spread the word! Nice young people finish first.

Here's proof. Ask coaches, friends and teachers about Shannon Reeves of Prince George High and you will get a reply similar to what Royals tennis coach Paul Cash said: "I've never heard her say anything negative about anybody."

Ask coaches, friends and teachers about Andre Ingram of Highland Springs High and you will get a reply similar to what Springers basketball coach George Lancaster said: "He's the kind of person you want to take home."

Niceness is just one of the character traits Reeves and Ingram share. They also are skilled athletes and excellent students. Both will major in some form of engineering in college. Put it all together and they are The Richmond Times-Dispatch/Richmond Sports Backers Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

The two, along with runners-up Meg Gill of L.C. Bird, Jamie Whitten of Collegiate and Robbie Fischetti of Mills Godwin and 16 other boys and girls finalists were honored at a banquet last night at the University of Richmond's Jepson Center.

Reeves and Ingram received $3,000 scholarships. Gill, Whitten and Fischetti received $1,500 scholarships. The other finalists received $1,000 awards.

This is the 17th year for the Scholar-Athlete program. Reeves is the first winner from Prince George. The first baseman for the Royals' softball team, she played in a state Group AAA quarterfinal game at Stonewall Jackson-Manassas yesterday afternoon, changed clothes in the car on the way home and made the banquet in time for the scholarship presentations.

Being nice is part of an abiding spirituality.

"Her spirituality is the hub of everything," softball coach Pat Waguespack said. "It's very strong in her family."

Reeves said, "The Lord is living in me, and I try to show his love and hope people notice. I don't want people to see me. I want them to see the Lord."

Reeves graduates next week as the class valedictorian and is headed to Virginia Tech. You will not find a grade of "B" or lower on any of her high school report cards.

In her softball career at Prince George, she has been a four-year starter and has been selected to the all-Central District team each year. She was the district player of the year last season, as well as being named first-team all-Central Region and All-Metro. She didn't take up tennis until Cash talked her into it in the eighth grade. She didn't lose a district match the past two seasons and was the district player of the year two seasons in a row.

Ingram is Highland Springs' second winner. Kim Townes won on the girls side in 1992.

Ingram graduates next week ranked fifth in the class. He's in the engineering program at Highland Springs and will keep engineering in the forefront at American University, but his ability as a basketball player could cause a detour. Asked during the presentation where he thought he would be in 10 years, he said, "I hope in a Timberwolves jersey."

Setting a high goal like playing in the NBA isn't farfetched. The past two seasons he has averaged 27 and 23 points a game and been named Capital District player of the year twice. He was named to the all-region and All-Metro first team each of those years, and he was tabbed as the state player of the year by The Associated Press and Virginia High School Basketball Coaches Association after the Springers won the state championship in March.

He learned early on that being nice was the right path.

"My parents are nice people, and it rubbed off," Ingram said. "It's how I was brought up. They taught me not to be boastful. It's rewarding because of things like tonight. This whole year has been a dream year. Everything has fallen into place."

The selection panel

Jack Berninger, Times-Dispatch sports editor; Howard Owen, T-D deputy managing editor Sports/Flair; Rick Thornton, T-D associate sports editor; Arthur Utley, T-D staff writer; Tracey Russell, Scott Schricker and Shelley deButts of the Sports Backers; area basketball official Reggie Cain; former University of Richmond basketball player John Davis; and former long distance swimmer Missie Hersey.

CORRECTION-DATE: June 7, 2003

CORRECTION:
Students from Highland Springs High School have won the top Scholar-Athlete award three times. A story in Friday's Times-Dispatch Sports section indicated a Highland Springs student had won the honor twice. The story omitted Chris Ogburn, who won the award in 1989.
