In reply to: judi 's message, "Nobody's Child was on USA tonight. This was a really good ep and so well done. But it was so sad and difficult to watch. I do have some questions though: (Inside)" on 21:25:43 03/30/06 Thu

This is a wonderful episode. I think Harm's natural sense of compassion is what kept him with Annie so she wouldn't be alone. In some why I think he felt guilty that he, the Navy and the world in general failed to protect her. Harriet was very sensitive due to her pregnancy but she should have wanted Annie's killer caught and not blamed Harm. I like the line by AJ at the end too. I was waiting for it. Harm alone at Annie's grave was very touching. He promised her to find her killer. Harm had his next obsession. (NT) -- Shell, 23:15:40 02/24/06 Fri

He has always shown a special affection for children- the kid on the abandoned air base in season I. Chloe, and, of course, Darlin. I think he was overwhelmed with the brutality of Annie's murder and wanted to know in himself, that she would not be alone. I was incredibly touched by his comment to the M.E. He visited her grave and spoke to her as he speaks to his dad. I'll bet he was the one who bought the gravestone, when she was identified. In "Blindside" he said "as a man who one day would like to have children".... You know he loves kids and would be an awesome father. I have wondered whether that is some of HAE slipping through into the character. It is SO believable. It was a powerful episode, and HAE did an incredible job. Well I have babbled on enough for now.(NT) - can j- waving to Judi across the border., 23:16:44 02/24/06 Fri

Harm did have a special connection with children. I was very happy when at the end of JAG Harm got the family he wanted. I was glad that the subject of Mattie was settled. Harm would never have abandoned Mattie. (NT) -- Shell, 23:29:43 02/24/06 Fri

1)I think it was more about Harm the protector, than Harm the lost little boy. Myabe it was the father in him was showing for the first time. I think tptb wanted to show pregnancy as a hormonal time. It was tptb's 'little woman' thing, IMHO. 3) I think that while they both hated what Willie was, they neither would have hurt him, though they would like to have thrown him in jail and thrown away the key. (NT) -- mkim I liked the line from AJ too, and I missed the 'old' Admiral from Seasons 1 through 8., 23:31:36 02/24/06 Fri

I haven't seen Nobody's Child in awhile, but I work for a case abuse prevention organization, and I appreciated Harm's compassion, which I think is why he wanted to stay for the autopsy. I agree that Harriett's reaction was TPTB wanting to portray pregnancy as invoking strange behaviors. I think Mac's line was more about saying that she trusted her judgment and reactions better. Remember she knows Harm is "driven by his emotions" as she says to him in GE. (NT) -- Araninda, 00:03:22

1) I don't think it's anything in his history, but the fact that she's speaking to him from beyond almost from the time he sees her body, and so he couldn't abandon her or the case.2) I agree with the others that said it was a TPTB hormone thing 3) It seemed to just be her way of saying she wanted a chance at him, but didn't really trust what she might do. I find this episode to be too painful to re-watch very often despite the good acting. It is just very sad in an unrelenting way. (NT) -- manette, 00:37:21 02/25/06 Sat

I think that most people would feel that they were abanding the little girl all over again. She had no one in life, so he wanted to be there for her in death. I don't think it had anything to do with his own, childhood experience. 2) Harriet plain annoyed me. Even with the hormones, I just didn't get her reaction. But then I've never been pregnant, so I wouldn't know. These episodes were superb, but terribly disturbing and sad. (NT) -- Cece, 00:55:35 02/25/06 Sat

I pretty much agree with Cec and Manette. I also find this much too sad to watch again, but I remember some of it. 1) I don't think it was really that 'personal.' Many rational people can feel morally ambiguous about some killings (drug dealers killing one another, organized crime figures doing the same) even though they would never condone murder. The brutal killing of a child is the other extreme. Most people feel more strongly about that than the killing of an innocent adult. Add in that the 'system' failed the child, and I think his reaction was somewhat understandable. He was according her more dignity in death than she was ever given in life. 2) Harriet I didn't get, other than if she were putting herself in Harm's place. She wouldn't have been able to cope with it, so she's questioning how he can. He's a person she likes and respects, and she's asking herself if he can deal with this in a rational manner, what is it that I'm not seeing in him? IMHO, it was simply a plot device to show the horrors of the child's life w/o being as sensational as a simple over the shoulder shot would have been. It wasn't that well done if that's what they were trying to do, but it got the photos in the show. I'm sure those of tptb whose opinion of women was still in the 50's thought it was a 'rational' way for a very pregnant woman to react. 3)I've always wondered if there were not some other dark secrets in Mac's past. I don't think Joe abused her, but it could have been another family member, friend, whoever. She did exhibit some signs of someone who has been sexually abused. Or maybe it happened to a friend. I can empathize with her desire to have a go at Willie. For that matter, it simply could have been the desire to keep Harm out of trouble. She was pretty good at tamping down some of his excesses at times.(NT) - CM>^.,.^<, 10:57:48 02/25/06 Sat

I agree with everyone on points 1 and 2, but on 3, I think Mac said that to stop Harm's arguement for her coming in the room. If she puts the reason for wanting the both of them in the room on her, then he can't argue. 4) I too loved the line from AJ, and even Harm in the next episode said something similar to Harriet when she was saying sorry to Harm. If I remember correctly, he said something like "if everyone who wanted to hit me left, we would loose half the Navy" lol (NT) -- spudz, 09:16:54 02/25/06 Sat

I forgot to say that I loved this episode. It makes me cry every time I see it. Harm's compasion, even AJ's compasion when Harm asked to stay on the case, AJ wasn't going to let him until Harm gave him the file. The look on AJ's face said it all. (NT) -- spudz, 09:19:02 02/25/06 Sat

This is one of those eps that I never rewatch if I can avoid it- to painful a subject matter... but - One of the things I always loved about JAG was the ability to inject humor in the most serious of subjects... When we're all tense and upset over the death of a little girl- AJ comes out with that line and makes you LOL...I missed that SO MUCH in the last seasons where everything was so serious and all the humor was completely gone. As for Harriet - I just chalked it up to being pregnant and hormonal... (NT) -- chris k, 09:27:57 02/25/06 Sat

I just finished recording this and I watched bits and pieces and the ending. Even though I hadn't been watching the whole time, I still found myself teary-eyed at the end. HAE's acting was superb!

1) I think he always had a soft spot for children--especially children who had been hurt or had lost a loved one. He knew personally how hard that can be to deal with. I think his past probably *did* have something to do with it. He also seemed to have a strong desire to be a protector of some sort, and children seemed to bring that out in him. 2) Several people have said that this was TPTB's idea of how emotional a pregnant woman can be. That may be true, but I don't think they were necessarily playing into a stereotype. I realize that some people go through many pregnancies without being overly emotional, but I think each person is different. I'm saying this as someone who has never been pregnant, but if you'll indulge me I'll try to explain. I'm on a monthly cycle of fertility drugs (hormones). Prior to starting treatment, my hormones were "out of whack" and I found myself on an emotional roller coaster that I never experienced while on the Pill. The fertility drugs have not stopped the ride, they've actually made it worse. I find myself crying for no reason at all. And I'm not just talking a few tears here and there. I'm talking totally uncontrolled sobbing and weeping. Obviously not everyone reacts this way--I'm just one of the lucky ones. So, having experienced what I have the past few months, I can certainly understand her reaction. Especially since she had something to cause it. No, her reaction may not be normal for everyone, but I don't think it's unrealistic. 3) I agree with spudz's view. When she said what she did, she got both of them in the room together and he couldn't argue about it.(NT) - JAG Junkie, 13:14:16 02/25/06 Sat

I agree, DJE is really a very good actor and has not gotten the credit he deserves. This ep and King of The Fleas both show his acting range along with some others. (NT) -- Jeanaz8, 22:09:25 02/25/06 Sat
