Goodbyes – Season 4

What It's About

Several storylines converge in the finale episode of season 4 as Harm draws ever closer to little Annie's killer, and the SecNav comes to a decision on Harm's request for transfer.

Reasons to Watch – Harm on a mission. Harm in leather. Harm just standing there in his office (shippers' delight). The main plot concerns Dar-lin and the man who killed her sister, but a good deal of attention is also paid to the impending change in Harm's status – and his life. We have a short appearance by Lt. Elizabeth "Skates" Hawkes, not seen since season 2's "Crossing the Line," as a kind of foreshadowing of things to come in later episodes.

Reasons to Tape – For non-shippers, I suppose the focus would be on Harm the hunter. His latest obsession is about to pay off if he can get there in time, and our boy is looking fine with those intense eyes tracking down a killer. The final confrontation may be disturbing for some, but veterans of "Magnum, P.I." will recognize DPB's signature use of the concept of a "higher morality" in resolving a dilemma.

For shippers, the last five minutes of this episode must be regarded as legendary. Never before and only twice since have Harm and Mac come this close to speaking from their hearts and not just their minds. The results are wrenching. Viewers will have their own take on whether the scene depicts two good friends in a "Hallmark moment" or two people desperate to reach out to one another, but afraid to finally fail. I know which one I'd choose.

If I've seen it once, I've seen it a thousand times, but it still holds my heart suspended. See it again and decide.
